Valkyrie's Di Fonga Initiation

Description

This is Valkyrie's initiation test for Di Fonga, a pack of #MafiaDogs.
Mafia Hounds belong to *CanidaeKing and are a closed breed - they are not available for personal making.

Valkyrie was already wet from the rain when she was lead by Quinn through the sewers, though her short coat never held any water. They made their way through the living quarters and down into a narrow passageway. The air grew heavy and humid, the walls seemed to pull themselves closer and closer to the hounds as they made their way, and the smell grew increasingly rotten. The new female crinkled her nose into somewhat of a scowl behind her leader, wearing it until the tunnel opened up into a small reservoir in which it could only be assumed the foulest of water was caught. It was nearly pitch black - the only light came from the opposite wall where there was a ladder leading up to a manhole, and it was vague at best.

"Now," Quinn announced, picking out a patch of un-soiled ground to sit on with care, "you must swim."

Stepping to the edge of the cement, the blue hound squinted into the darkness. It wasn't a terribly long way across, but the water stunk even worse than she had thought and she could hear rats moving along the walls; catch the occasional gleam of hungry eyes watching her. "Across?"

"Across and back," replied Quinn, her voice still smooth but a little impatient. "And hurry up. This place smells worse every time."

With nothing visible but the back wall, Valkyrie did not bother to nod her agreement with the other hound. She instead went right to work, turning, moving away from the edge, then circling back, bounding a couple of steps and then springing into the murk. She felt like a rock sinking into mud as she landed and quickly pushed her head above the water, paddling her strongest to get this over with. She was headstrong but glad that nobody could see her panic. In the murky blackness her heart pounded in her ears, her nose and eyes burned, and unknown solid things bumped into her on the surface and further below.

She made it to the back wall quickly, but the trip back was not as fast with nothing to look at but darkness and nothing to think about but the uncertainty of when she would run into the opposite ledge. Something heavy and oozing slid across her muzzle and she could feel the prickle of tiny little claws underneath, scratching at her face, quickly making it's way towards her eyes and biting at the meat of her brows. The hound growled and shook her head violently, trying to rid her face of what had to be a rat, but when it wouldn't move she dunked her head underwater instead. Her body followed.

It was easy to become disoriented below as she thrashed about, slowed by the muck, moving until the rat finally let go. The surface was nowhere to be found when she tried to catch her breath, and 'up' could not be discerned. Valkyrie swam blindly, panic taking more of her breath away as her lungs grew tight and her head became fuzzy and confused. She lost control of herself and gulped, her mouth and throat filling with sewage. At long last she bumped into a wall and used it to propel herself in a direction she only hoped was up. The dog had never taken a sweeter breath as her face broke the surface of the water and, panting, she pulled herself up onto the concrete landing where Quinn was waiting.

"All right," the spotted hound purred, but she did not speak further, interrupted by Valkyrie shaking herself and hacking up things she was happy she couldn't see.

The scratching of rat claws pattered nearby, approaching, looking for a quick meal. Several came upon Valkyrie at once, biting at her front legs, and she could feel the blood rushing to her head. In a fit of rage she let out a devilish snarl and plunged her head down, grabbing hold of a rat with her teeth and shaking it violently, biting with all of her might, then bracing it against the ground with her paws and shredding it as the others scurried away. When she was finished she kicked it into the water - there was a satisfying ka-thurmp noise as it splashed and sunk below - and then addressed Quinn in a hoarse voice. "My apologies. How did I do?"

Disgust apparent in her voice, she replied, "I will speak to Atro," before turning and trotting up through the tunnel again, a tired and smelly Valkyrie following behind.
